Ordinary, yet lovely days

For fourteen years after I gave them to my mother as a gift, these worn-out chukka boots were her faithful companions, worn every single day whenever she went out.
Despite being worn daily, receiving almost no care, never using a shoe tree, and retaining their glue-on soles, they stubbornly held out.
Each time I returned home, my best friend would repair the heels.
Lovers of fine footwear might chastise me, but this very state- one that seems to echo my mother's laughter is, to me, the perfect form.

And the Billiken doll that had been by her side for many years,too. It had already been in our home when I was a child. She often told me that in her youth, she loved the film Waterloo Bridge and aquired this memorable doll from the film.
From now on, I shall take it on and share life's ups and downs with it in Munich.
Mum, you did your best in life. I love you.

母にプレゼントしてから１４年もの間,ほぼ毎日外出のパートナーだったボロボロのチャッカーブーツ。
連日着用、手入れもろくにせず、シューツリーも未使用、僕が帰国する度親友に踵リペアしてもらいながら接着底なのに頑張ってくれました。
靴を愛する方々にはお叱りいただきそうですが、僕には母の笑い声が聞こえてくるようなこの状態こそが完成形だと感じてます。

そしてもう一つ、このビリケン人形も彼女に長年寄り添っていたパートナーです。僕が幼い頃にはすでに我が家にいました。若い頃見た映画”哀愁”が好きで、とりわけこの人形が劇中で印象的だった事もあって手に入れたんだとよく語っていました。
これからは僕が引き継ぎ、ミュンヘンで苦楽を共にしようと思います。
オカン、お疲れ様でした。

Grand Maître

When I was studying in London, the owner of a tool shop I visited every time I went to Paris asked me, ‘Are you also studying shoe making at Maurice's?’ He asked me. He seemed to think that there was a shoe workshop nearby and that I was training there. I left the shop and headed for the workshop, which the owner told me about. Despite my sudden visit, I was allowed to enter, and in front of me, a small, sharp-eyed old shoemaker in a work apron was staring at me.

Monsieur Maurice Arnoult was born in 1908 and was already over 90 years old.  His apprentice interpreted for Mr Arnoult, who was hard of hearing...  Mr.Arnoult said, "Where did you come from? I can not speak English! I can speak German," he began, smiling and teaching me about the ins and outs of shoemaking. As I left the workshop, the apprentice woman informed me that it was unusual for the difficult Maurice to be so kind to me.
Nevertheless, I was so busy with my own personal commitments that I only got to say hello to him a few times after that. Now, when I read biographies and interviews of Mr Arnoult written by other people, I still have a few regrets that I didn't have the chance to talk to him more often.

Today is the anniversary of the death of Mr Arnoult, who passed away 15 years ago in 2010 at the age of 102.

I fondly remember the peaceful scene of the day we met - Mr Arnoult's small workshop in Belleville, surrounded by cats and loudly communicating with his apprentices.
And the appearance of Mr Arnoult, a shoemaker in spite of his age, continues to be a role model for me.

ロンドン留学時パリに行くたび訪れた靴道具屋の店主に、”おまえもモーリスの所で靴の勉強してるのか？”と聞かれました。近所に靴工房があるようで、そこで修行中と思われたようです。店を出て私は店主に聞いた坂の上の工房へ向かいました。そこは玄関の奥階段を登った裏庭に面しており、突然の訪問にもかかわらず入室を許可された私の正面に、小柄な眼光鋭い作業エプロンをつけた老職人が、じっと私を見ていました。

モーリス アルノー氏（Maurice Arnoult）は１９０８年生まれで、この時既に９０歳を超えていました。耳が遠い為、先程私を氏に取り継いでくれたお弟子さんを交えて挨拶すると、”お前どっからきた？英語はわからん！ドイツ語なら話せるんだけどなぁ、” から始まり、靴作りの心得など笑顔でご教授してくれました。工房を辞すとき弟子女性には、気難しいモーリスがこんなに好意的に接するのは珍しいんですよ、と嬉しいことを教えてくれました。
それにもかかわらず、私は自己都合の忙しさにかまけて、それ以降は彼に数回ほどしか挨拶には行けてませんでした。今にして他の方々の書いたアルノー氏の伝記やインタヴューを読む度に、もっと色々とお話しさせて貰えばよかったと今更後悔しています。

今日は１５年前の２０１０年に、１０２歳で長寿を全うしたアルノー氏の命日です。

出会った日の、あの平和な光景-猫達に囲まれ大声で弟子とやりとりするアルノー氏のベルヴィルの小さな工房が懐かしく思い出されます。
そして、歳を重ねても一職人然したアルノー氏の佇まいは、今でも私のお手本であり続けています。

A certain encounter

I was reminded of this story when my Chelsea boots were completed last week.

After graduating from the Cordwainers in 2001, I moved to Paris in search of a new place to live, but I didn't speak any French and had no connections with French people. When I was pondering how and where to make shoes, I was introduced to a madame. She is the owner and designer of a boutique in the street behind the Pompidou Centre.
She also had a studio in her backyard and lent me a square metre of space in one corner of it free of charge.
One day, a tall, grey-haired gentleman came into the studio and had a pleasant conversation with Madame in the back.
That day, a female staff member at the atelier invited me to "my birthday party this evening, Ryota, come too", so I decided to attend that evening.
When I arrived at her house, the party was already crowded with guests, and as I could barely speak French, I enjoyed the party atmosphere, observing the guests in the room. There I found a gentleman who had been at the studio during the day and spoke to him. (I remembered that he was speaking English with madame...) .
He was wearing a three-piece suit of grey windowpane (or was it glen check?) with light blue lines, saying he was from New York,
"Oh, you make shoes?" "I used to make and sell clothes to young musicians in London with my girlfriend." He started talking about it.
His non-American London Cockney accent made me feel a little uncomfortable, but at the same time, as I looked into his eyes, I had a sense of déjà vu, and I was about to say, ‘You're not by any chance, ,you..are...?

"My name is Malcolm McLaren! Nice to meet you!"

He reached out to me. Even with only a basic knowledge of punk, I knew about the boutiques Let It Rock, Seditionaries and Sex, and I knew he was the manager of the Sex Pistols. So I was shaking his hand half-heartedly,
"My ex-partner's name is Vivienne, do you know her?" I think he went on to say something like that. This is all I can remember now, but the lady hosting the party (who seemed to be a friend of Malcolm's) laughed and said, 
"Hey Malcolm, shall I put on The Pistols for background music?"
All I remember is that I was beside her and very nervous.

Chelsea Boots → Chelsea area of London → King's Road boutiques → Malcolm. It was a slightly bizarre game of memory association.

先週チェルシーブーツが完成した際に思い出した話。

2001 年にロンドン靴学校を卒業後、新天地を求めパリに移り住み始めた僕はフランス語も全く話せずフランス人とのコネクションもゼロに近いスタートでした。さてこれからどうやって靴作ろうかと思案してた頃に、1人のマダムを紹介されました。ポンピドーセンター裏手通りにあるブティックオーナー兼デザイナーの彼女のブティックはバックヤードにアトリエも構えており、僕はその隅の1平方メートル程のスペースを無償で使わせてもらう事になりました。
ある日のこと、背の高い白髪の紳士がアトリエに来店しマダムと奥で楽しげに会話していました。同日午後にアトリエスタッフの女性に ”私の誕生日パーティーあるからリョータも来なさいよ” との招待を受けました。
その晩彼女宅に着くと既に多くの来客で賑わっており、フランス語をほとんど話せない僕は室内のゲストたちを観察したりしてパーティーの雰囲気を眺めているとその中に昼間アトリエに来た紳士を見つけます。確かマダムと英語で話してたことを思い出したので、英語で話しかけてみました。
水色のラインが入ったグレーのウインドーペン（か、グレンチェックだったと思う）の３ピーススーツのその彼は、ニューヨークから来たとのことでした。でも、“おーお前靴作ってんのか？俺も昔彼女とロンドンで若いミュージシャンに服作ったり売ったりしてたんだ“
そんなことを話し始めた彼の英語はアメリカ人のアクセントとは異なり、むしろ僕にはロンドンのコックニーに似たアクセントに感じたのです。そんなちょっとした違和感が彼の目を覗くうちに既視感のような感覚が湧き、"あなたひょっとして,,”と僕が言いかけた言葉に被って

“マイネーム イズ マルコム マクラーレン。 ナイストゥミーチャゥ“

と自らを名乗り手を差し伸べてきました。かじった程度のパンク知識の僕ですら、レットイットロック、セデショナリーズ、セックスというブティック、、そして言わずもがなセックス・ピストルズのマネージャーという事くらいは知ってた為、暫し放心状態の中彼と握手していました。

“俺の元パートナーさ、ヴィヴィアンってんだけど、お前知ってるかー？“などなど、今となってはこのくらいしか覚えていませんが、パーティー主催者の女性が(マルコムと友達だった様です)
“ねぇマルコム、BGMにピストルズでも流そーか？“
と笑いながら言っていましたが、横にいた僕はヒヤヒヤしてた事だけは覚えています。

チェルシーブーツ→ロンドンのチェルシー地区→キングスロードのブティック→マルコム。ちょっぴり奇妙で懐かしい連想ゲーム的な思い出でした。"

There are times when that happens...

As I have mentioned before, my workshop is located in the stonemason's workshop opposite the Northern Cemetery, so some people who visit the stonemason for work often mistake my workshop at the end of the corridor for an office and come in.(Despite the signs at the entrance to the building and at the entrance to my workshop: ......) . I am then always asked questions such as.

"My husband left on xx day of  xx month and..." 
"The dimensions of the stone are xx long and xx wide..."
"I have made an appointment, where is the master?"

Whenever I am asked such a question, I explain that this is a shoemaker's workshop, but it happens several times a month in quicksand, and only when I can't stop working on it,

"Dear customer,  from this point onwards we are a shoe workshop, not a masonry office."

I put these notices on the door, but as it turns out, they are not very effective.
On the contrary, they become more interested in shoemaking, talk to me more and take photos.It even has the opposite effect...

Please pray as I work today that they will notice the warning sign on the door.

(I've had a few crooks in the past who have tried to open the door or knock and break it open, so I've basically stopped locking the door when I am in the workshop. Oh! What was happening every time I left the workshop open for a long period of time? I'm a little horrified at the moment because it suddenly occurred to me.)

以前書いた通り、私の工房は北部墓地の向かいに立地している石材屋作業場内にある為、石材屋に仕事依頼目的で訪れる方の中には、廊下奥の当工房を事務所と勘違いして度々入室してきます。（建物入り口と、工房入り口に看板を出しているにもかかわらずです...）そしていつも以下のような質問を投げかけられます。

”私の夫が何月何日に旅立って..." 
”石の寸法が縦〇〇、横〇〇なんだけど..."
"アポイント入れたものですが親方はどこにいますか？”

このような質問をされる度に、ここは靴屋の工房ですと説明しているのですが、流石に月に何度も、それも作業中で手を止めることができない時に限って発生したりするので、

”お客様各位、これより靴工房です。石工屋ではございません。”

こんな注意書きをドアに貼っているのですが、結論から言うとあまり効果はありません。
それどころか靴作り興味を持ち、さらに話しこまれたり、写真撮られたり、逆効果なのではないかと思うほどです。

どうか扉の注意書きに気づいてくれる様、今日も作業しながら祈る次第です。

（過去何度か扉を壊さんばかりにドアを開けてこようとしたりノックしてきたりする強者がいた為ドアの鍵を閉めることは基本やめています。あ！工房を長期空けていた時は毎回どうなっていたんだろう？今突然頭に浮かびちょっとだけゾッとしてます）

Ich fertigte nicht nur meine eigenen Maßschuhe an, sondern arbeitete auch als Subunternehmer für andere Werkstätten. Das war eine sehr interessante Arbeit, da die Haus style nach den Anforderungen der einzelnen Werkstätten angefertigt wurden, die eine andere stilistische Schönheit als mein eigener Stil hatten.
Diese Auftragsarbeiten umfassten auch Reparaturen.
Er entfernte alte Nägel und Nähfäden von abgenutzten Absätzen und durchlöcherten Sohlen und ersetzte sie durch neue Sohlen, nähte Rahmen neu, verwendete Oberteile wieder und baute ganze Schuhe neu auf, manchmal sogar alle Sohlen der Schuhe seines Großvaters, damit sie von den Enkelkindern des Kunden getragen werden konnten.
Die Möglichkeit einer langen Lebensdauer durch wiederholte Reparaturen macht den Reiz dieser Maßschuhe und nach dem Goodyear-Rahmen genähten Schuhe aus.

Diese Erfahrung führte zu dem Entschluss, auch einen Reparaturdienst einzurichten.
Die Reparaturen beschränken sich jedoch auf Maßschuhe und Rahmengenäht Schuhe, es werden aber auch fertige Schuhe aus anderen Werkstätten und von anderen Marken akzeptiert.

Da keine Maschinen zum Einsatz kommen, sind die Zeit- und Arbeitskosten ehrlich gesagt hoch, aber ich hoffe, dass mir Ihnen Inhalte anbieten können, die Ihre aktuellen Schuhe verbessern, indem mir meine bereits erwähnte Erfahrung mit outwork Bespoke shoemaking und Reparaturen nutzen.

Derzeit können wir diesen Service nur in Deutschland und nach Möglichkeit innerhalb der EU anbieten, aber wir freuen uns über jeden Interessenten.

As well as making my own shoes, I also worked as an outworker for other workshops. This was very interesting work, as the house style was made according to each workshop's requirements, which had a different stylistic beauty to my own style.
These outsourced jobs also included requests for repairs.
I removed old nails and sewing threads from shaved heels and pitted soles and replaced them with new soles, re-sewed welt replacements, reused uppers and rebuilt entire shoes, and sometimes I did all soles on grandfather's shoes so that the client's grandchildren could wear them.
The possibility of longevity through repeated repairs is the appeal of these handmade shoes and shoes with Goodyear welt.

Based on my outworking experience, I decided to start a repair service as well.
However, repairs are limited to handmade shoes and Goodyear welted shoes, but I also accept ready-made shoes from other workshops and other brands.

The process does not use machines, so the time and work costs are honestly higher, but I hope to provide content that upgrades your current shoes, using my experience in the aforementioned outwork Bespoke shoe making and repair.

At present, we can only offer this service in Germany and, if possible, within the EU, but we look forward to hearing from interested parties.

Tracks towards harmony

Handmade shoes have a strip of leather called a welt, which is attached around the circumference of the shoe and serves to hold the stitching threads when the sole is attached. The welt and sole are sewn together using sewing thread and a stitching awl and a fudge wheel is used to set the stitch spacing and to decorate the sides of the shoe.

This cogwheeled tools, which carve a pattern like a railway track, have different spacing between the cogs depending on their wheel number. Different shoemakers and workshops have different standards, such as this number pitch for this style and this number pitch for this sole thickness.(Although there is a common industry standard.) When I was an apprentice, I followed my master's standards, and now I have developed my own standards.

It is part of the shoemaking process, but for me it is a beautiful process, like harmonising a painting and a picture frame.

(In my opinion, shoes that look balanced and beautiful have great harmony in this area).


手製靴にはウェルトと呼ばれる帯状の革が靴の外周に装着されており、ソール取り付けの際に縫い糸を止める役割を果たします。縫い糸とステッチングオールと呼ばれる専用のキリ／千枚通しを使いウェルトとソールを縫い止めていくのですが、その際に縫い目の間隔設定と靴側面の装飾も兼ねる道具、ファッジウィールを使用します。

線路の軌条（レール）の様な模様を刻むこの歯車付き工具は番号によって刻む間隔の広さが異なります。このスタイルならこのウィール、このソール厚ならこのウィールというように職人や工房ごとの異なる基準で使い分けします。（業界の共通基準はありますが。）私は修業先で師匠達のスタンダードを踏襲していき今の自分基準が出来上がりました。

靴製作のプロセスの一部ですが、絵画と額縁の調和作業をしているようで私には美しい工程に思えます。

（一個人の意見ですが、バランスよく美しく見える靴はこのあたりの調和が素晴らしいです）

Wandering thoughts

Round soles have a high toe height, are cushioned and easy to walk in, but wear out easily from the centre of the sole and have a high heel to match the round sole, making the shoe look slightly more compact.
Flat soles are stable when worn and have an elegant silhouette rising from the low toe towards the mouth of the shoe, but they lack a little cushioning, feel as if they are pushed up from the ground and the side of the sole does not look as beautiful when the entire ground surface is worn away.
Narrow-waisted soles have excellent flexibility and the most elegant silhouette, but their strength as a sole is easily compromised.
Wide-waisted soles are less susceptible to external influences in any usage environment, and provide stability and strength, but are undeniably uncouth.

For many shoemakers, making shoes while taking into account the many and varied requirements of their customers can be both difficult and enjoyable.
In my case, when setting the sole, I rely on the memorandum at the beginning of the sentence - a memorandum that is not based on evidence, but on my own experience and my own prejudices - to rack my brains and imagine the end point of the best combination to achieve a satisfactory balance.

The comfort of the shoe and the appearance of the sole part - it is always a distressing process.

Goodness, I've jumped into a really difficult profession.

(Again, this is dogmatic personal opinion. Please understand)

丸みがあり爪先の高さも程良い靴底は、歩行しやすくクッション性が出る反面で、底の中心から磨耗しやすく丸みに合わせたヒールは高めになり、靴はやや小ぶりに仕上がる。
平らな靴底は着用時の安定感があり、低いつま先から履き口に立ち上がっていくシルエットは流麗である反面、緩衝にやや乏しく地面からの突き上げを感じ、接地部分全体が摩耗していくごとに片減りが靴の外観に影響する。
ウェスト部分を細く設定した靴底は程よい屈曲性を持ち、最もエレガントなシルエットを堪能できるが、靴底としての強度を損ない気味になる。
幅のある靴底はどのような使用環境下でも外的影響を受けずらく、安定性があり力強さも感じるが、野暮ったさも否めない。

多くの靴職人にとってお客様の多種多様なリクエストを考慮した靴制作は作り手にとって難しさもあり楽しさも感じるところではないかと思います。
私の場合ボトムメイキング時に文頭の備忘メモ -自分がこれまでに見て触れて感じてきた靴の底周りの仕上げに関する独断的かつ無根拠な備忘録- が脳内で悩みながらベストな組み合わせを探し出し、自分が良しとするバランスまでの終着点を妄想しながら作業を続けます。

靴の履き心地とソール周りの見栄え- 悩ましい工程なんです。

大変な職業に飛び込んでしまったもんです。

A good workman does not blame his tools​

One of the essential tools for shoemaking is a special pliers called Lasting Pincers.
It is the tool that unites the upper and the wooden last, and for me it is the symbolic tool of the shoemaker. (Only a few of my colleagues might agree.)
When I first held it in my hands, I felt the weight of its presence and was so impressed that I had stepped into the world of shoemakers, it was the tool of my dreams.
Since then, I have acquired various pincers, used them and then given them away. As an inexperienced craftsman who had not even reached the level of "a good craftsman does not blame his tools", despite these comfortable tools, one thing led to another and I repeatedly made the foolish mistake of using another ones over and over again and embarked on a long journey in search of a pincer.

After leaving London and moving to Paris, I went to a neighbourhood flea market as part of my weekend routine. One weekend I waded through a pile of rain-soaked cardboard boxes, and amongst those that had been placed directly on the ground, exposed to the elements, I found something familiar. I pick up the orange, rusted lump with a stuck handle. It belonged to the pincer that my teacher had let me touch, the one that had started my journey to find the pincer.
Many of the tools used by our craftsmen are old and have been passed down from master to apprentice, so it is not always easy to find them, but miraculously I was able to find them. It is an unforgettable memory that reminds me that God exists.
However, it was not until long after I became independent that I started using this. Awe, I still don't use the main one very often.(putting the cart before the horse) This may have been influenced by the sight of my teacher, who at the time was using another one as his main pincer, unlocking a drawer and taking out a pincer of the special one's when he was about to start a big job.

When will I understand that 'a good workman does not blame his tools'?


靴製作に欠かせない道具の一つで、ラスティングピンサー / Lasting pincerという専用のペンチがあります。
アッパーと木型を一体化させる道具で、僕にとっては靴職人のシンボリックな道具です。（少数の同業者のみ同意していただけるかも、ですが）
初めて手に入れた時、その存在感ある重みが手に伝わり、靴職人の世界に一歩足を踏み入れた感動を覚えたほど憧れの工具でした。
その後しばしば異なるピンサーを手に入れ、使用し、手放すという愚業を繰り返した時期があります。”弘法筆を選ばず”の域に近づいてもいない未熟者の分際で、使い心地の申し分のないこれら歴代の道具を取り換えひっかえ繰り返しさせたある出来事。それが発端となり僕をピンサー探しの長い旅に誘うのでした。

ロンドンを離れパリに移り、とある週末、ルーティーンとなっていた近所の蚤の市回りにその日も僕はそこで雨風にさらされながら直接地面に置かれてぐしゃぐしゃのダンボールの山をかき分けていて、ある一つの箱の中に見覚えある物を見つけます。オレンジ色に錆び付いて持ち手も固着して動かないその塊を手に入れ、帰宅後磨き上げたそれは、この旅の引き金となった、師匠が握らせてくれたあのラスティングピンサーでした。
我々職人の使う道具は、その多くが昔に製造された古い物である事や、師から弟子へと受け継がれていく物ですので、探したところで簡単には出会えない事が多いのですが,奇跡的に巡り合えた,未だに忘れられない良き日の思い出です。
そんな思い入れがあるこのピンサーを使い始めたのは、結局、更にずいぶん後の独立後からでした。畏れ多すぎて今でもメインとしての出番は多くありません（本末転倒です）。ひょっとすると当時僕の見た光景 、、別のピンサーをメインで使っていた師匠が、ここぞの大仕事の際に（僕にはそう見えてました）引き出しの鍵を開けてそのラスティングピンサーを取り出していた事に何らかの影響があるのかもしれません。

弘法大師は偉大です、という話でした。

Half - a - shoe

Munich is now in its Oktoberfest season.

Men and women of all ages, dressed in traditional costumes, drink, eat and enjoy the festivities under the autumn sky.
The folk shoes worn on these occasions are the Haferlschuhe.
These shoes (Half- a- shoe / One of the theories) with side laces and toes like the bow of a ship were invented in the mountainous Allgäu region, inspired by the shape of the hoof of the Gämse,(Chamois) an alpine animal similar to a goat, which is native to this region.
The angled toe increases strength, takes up less space in the toe, has a compact sole and makes it easier to work and walk on sloping mountain slopes.Against this background, it was probably inevitable that this shoe was born in this region.
These shoes are attractive and different from today's dress shoes.

(Various theories. Personal speculation included. The examples shown in the photographs differ from the original decoration/process).


ミュンヘンは今、オクトーバーフェストの季節です。
伝統衣装に身を包んだ老若男女が秋空の下で飲んだり食べたり祭りを楽しんでいます。
その際に着用される民族靴がハーフェルシュー (Hafearlschuhe)です。
この船の舳先のようなトゥが特徴のサイドレース紐の短靴は、Allgäuの山岳地帯で、当地方に生息するGämse (シャモア)というヤギに似た高山動物の蹄の形状から発想を得て作られた作業靴がルーツの靴です。
角張った爪先によって強度が増し、指先スペースもあまり取らず、靴底もコンパクトで傾斜面での労働、歩行のしやすさもあり、このような背景からこの靴がこの地方で生まれたのは必然だったのでしょう。
現在のドレスシューズとはまた違った魅力的な靴です。
